Rebecca Spencer, Broadway and Stage Performer-Episode #30

Nov 15, 2017 | 1 comment

Rebecca Spencer is simply one of the best actors and singers working in musical theatre today. Her theatrical career was based in New York City for over 28 years before she moved to Los Angeles. Rebecca was an original 1997 Broadway cast member of Jekyll & Hyde. And as an early collaborator, she created the role of the Lisa Carew, Jekyll’s fiancé, in the 1990 Alley Theatre world premiere playing opposite Chuck Wagner and Linda Eder.

During her three-year Broadway run in Jekyll & Hyde, she was first contracted as the only female swing, came full circle to perform the role she created, renamed from Lisa to Emma, and took her final bow assuming principal roles of Lady Beaconsfield and Gwennie, playing opposite Linda Eder with Robert Cuccioli, Rob Evan, Jack Wagner, Sebastian Bach and David Hasselhoff.

For Hal Prince’s International Companies of Phantom of the Opera she played the role of Carlotta in the Hamburg, Germany Company, sung in German, and years later, assumed the role of Madame Giry, launching the 25th Anniversary World Tour of Phantom of the Opera in Asia. Prior to that, she created the role of Madame Giry for the lavish production of Phantom in Las Vegas, under the direction of both Harold Prince and choreographer, Gillian Lynne.

In her 30+ years on stage, Rebecca has performed principal roles in over 65 regional theatre, opera, national tour and Off-Broadway productions, including Mirsinah in Kismet, Margot in The Desert Song, Cunegonde in Leonard Bernstein’s Candide and Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly among many others.

Rebecca was awarded the BackStage Bistro Award for Best Recording for her debut album, Wide Awake and Dreaming. She followed that release with Fair Warning, inspired by the Ladies of the Red Hat Society. The recent release of her beautiful new 2017 Christmas recording, STILL, STILL, STILL, marks her third Solo recording distributed by LML Music.

TV credits include Third Watch, Law and Order: SVU, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, and A Linda Eder Christmas for Bravo.

Her concert career began when the late great, award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch handpicked her to tour as his guest soloist.
